Due to the specific nature of railway infrastructure, electrical eguipment is dispersed over a considerable area. The equipment must meet hight reliability requirements. Many services are kept ready on a continuos basis to make sure the railway traffic flows properly. The speed of their reaction to the emergencies identified depends largely on how fast they are informed about the breakdown. Additionally, modern company management cannot exist without a rational energy management.

The railway power system DIMaC-EK (an abbreviation which stands for a Distributed Intelligent Monitoring and Control System) designed by Zakład Automatyk i iUrządzeń Pomiarowych AREX facilitates remonte control of low voltage electrical equipment disperesd over a large area. It was in particular designed to be installed in unattended railway stations and the entire stretches of railway lines controlled from a single control centre. DimaC-EK is a set power switchgears located in several places covered by the same IT system.

  System structure

DIMaC-EK is a classical dispersed system with the following layers:

        - autonomous power switchgears (REOR, RSO, RSOT etc),
        - archiving and data processing (NEK),
        - system communication (LAN NETWORK),
        - control and management (SERWER + DIAGNOSTIC STATIONS).

POWER SWITCHGEARs

The power switchgears is the main element of the system. Each switchgear works autonomously and is equpped with a controller facilitating the execution of the programmed algorithms and communication with the system. All the switchgears has a digital RS-485 communication line and -as an option - a CANBUS/RS485 line.

Switchgears communicates with the NEK master controller, which is a joint element for all the subsystems.

DIMaC-EK is equpped with the following systen switchgears (depending on the intended use):

Switchgears for electric heating of switches - REOR
Switchgears for the lighting of railway area - RSO
Switchgears for the lighting and hydraulic servicing of tunnels - RSOT
Switchgears for the servicing of pumps - RP
unauthorised access and fire signalling centre - RA

ARCHIVING AND DATA PROCESSING LAYER - NEK MASTER CONTROLLER

The NEK master controller manages communication between the switchgears and the server and facilitates central management of the quipment from the station. The controller plays the function of a communication hub. Additionally, NEK master controllers facilitate the basic servicing of all the equipment in a single station. The devices are served through operator panels and a console located on the front board of the NEK controlgear.

SYSTEM COMMUNICATION LAYER (LAN NETWORK)

The DIMNET network facilitates the communication of the device connected to the DIMaC-EK sysytem and may use telephone modems, fibre optic lines, GSM/GPRS modems, GSM text messages and a radio network. The manner of communication is determined by geographical, technical and economic conditions.

If no transmission lines are available, GSM/GPRS packet transmission connections are recommendede for single devices or groups of devices. GPRS technology guarantees permanent connection with the device, while minimising the cost of installation and maintenance.

CONTROL AND MANAGEMENT LAYER (SERVER + DIAGNOSTIC STATIONS)

The server makes data available to authorised computer stations connected to the DIMNET network. The monitoring of the switchgears control take place throgh operators' computers connected to the server and equipped with the WizAr visualization software. The same possibilities are available to service teams eguipped with laptops with a GSM or (GSM/GPRS) modem. The CS control stations provide the possibility to monitor, control, diagnose, change threshold values, and record emergencies and all values measures.

  Functions

DIMaC-EK:

- guarantees the effective fubctioning of switchgear in winter,
- provides lighting in railway areas,
- dries excess water in tunnels and other railway areas,
- covers railway facilities with unauthorized access control and fire control,
- measures and calculates electric power at power distribution points.

System devices may work:

- automatically,
- manual,
- remotely,
- locally.

AUTOMATIC CONTROL

The controller executes automatic control in accordance with the algorithm on the basic of readings from detectors and sensors depending on the values programmed. In this working mode the equipment works automatically and odes not require the user's intervention.

REMOTE CONTROL

Remote control makes it possible to switch output circuits (ON and OFF mode) from the level of the master controller or diagnostics station.

LOCAL (EMERGENCY) CONTROL

The local (emergency) control makes it possible for the equipment to work in the case of a controller breakdown. The control is executed directly from the switchgear via the working mode switch In the case of the switchgear used for the electric heating of switches, the mode activates the connection of output circuits and, for other cubiles, it activates the operation depending on the external transducer (e.g. the dusk transducer).

DIAGNOSTICS

The devices of the DIMaC-EK system facilitate a comprehensive diagnostics of the switchgears.
They:

control the status of the protection elements
check whether the contactors work correctly
control the power of the output circuits
     detect module and controller breakdowns (self-diagnostics);
     detect open switchgear door.

MEARUREMENTS

The possibility to measure the basic electrical values facliltates the control of electric energy quality. The values measured include:

     voltage in the particular phases
     power in the particular circuits
     energy consumed
     switchgear operation time
time of operation of the particular circuits
conter of activations in the particular circuits

ARCHIVES

All the events, breakdowns and measurements are archived in the system. The archiwing takes place at four levels:

- in devices (a short-term base where the data is kept for appproximately 7 days);
- in master controllers (a medium-term base where the data is kept for appproximately 30 days;
- on the server (a long-term base where the data is kept for appproximately 2 years)
- in diagnostic stations (a handy base kept on the terminal's disc for fast access and data processing).

The archives base in the DIMaC-EK system makes it possible to:

- record events and breakdowns, including their time (data and hour)
- record voltge at intervals set and whenever threshold values are exceeded
- record power at intervales set and whenever threshold values are exceeded
- record the enegry consumed (once a day)

The organisation of the archives makes it possible to store complete information in the system even if communication is lost at any level.

COORPORATION WITH OTHER SYSTEMS

DIMaC-EK is an open system. It facilitates cooperation with other systems at various levels. The devices and the NEK master controller may cooperate with other systems operating in the CANBUS/RS485 standard in compliance with the PPM2 protocol. At the level of the server and diagnostic ststions, cooperation is possible with the Ebiscreen-3 railway traffic control and management system manufactured by Bombardier Transportation (ZWUS) Sp. z o.o..

VISUALISATION OF THE WORK OF DIMaC-EK

The visualisation of the work of DIMaC-EK is provided in the CS control station and the MS monitoring station. They facilitate remote control, diagnostics and modification of parameters in any system object. The data and commands are transmitted via cable lines, fibre optic lines or radio links.

The CS control station controls, programmes, signals and record breakdowns. It is normally provided in the Local Control Center and is equipped with a central unit, a monitor, a printer, system software and the WizAr visualisation software. It is designed to work in an unbroken manner. It is connected to the DIMNET network via one of the network access points.

The MS monitoring stations are used for the regular monitoring of system work and are normally located in the facilities used by the maintenance or control services. The monitoring station may be connected to the DIMNET network hub in a permanent way or via a commuted telephone line, GSM modem or GPRS modem.
